The Move It Project
The Move It project aims to:
Increase the number of local people participating in physical activity
To increase the awareness of the benefits of exercise in counteracting physical and emotional ill health
Identify and address common barriers to participation
Provide opportunities for local people to take part in physical activity
What we do
There is a well-established programme of open sessions that run weekly in various neighbourhood centres locally. This includes activities such as Tai Chi, Aquafit, Jive/Salsa, Line Dancing, Keep fit and Tea Dances. See the diary page for details of the current programme.
The classes are free of charge and crèche facilities are provided where possible to remove barriers to participation. The classes can be attended by anyone living in the Forth Neighbourhood Partnership area. The programme is under constant development in order to meet the needs and demands of the local community.
The ‘Move It’ project works in partnership with other agencies in the local area and regularly organises taster sessions where requested.
Much of the project’s work is done with the elderly community. The project regularly visits residential homes, sheltered housing and churches in the area to deliver chair-based exercise.
The project received recognition in last years (2005) ‘Get up & Go’ awards for ‘Ensuring the inclusion of older people within the city of Edinburgh’.
Physical Activity Consultation Service
This is a free & confidential one-to-one service available with your local physical activity specialist, Lianne Pipskyj.
Lianne has good experience in exercise prescription and is also qualified to work with those suffering from conditions such as diabetes, angina, high blood pressure and arthritis. The Move It project provides accessible physical activity opportunities in the local community. Individuals who use the consultation service will be encouraged to take advantage of activities available on the Move It programme.
The consultations are available for individuals who are thinking about becoming more active but are unsure how to go about this. The appointment lasts for approximately 1 hour and will take place at the Health Project. The consultation will contain the following elements;
Assessing the client's current physical activity status
Discussing likes/dislikes
The pro’s & con’s of becoming more active
Addressing and overcoming barriers
Identifying local physical activity opportunities
Planning & goal setting
By the end of the consultation the individual will have a clearer picture of exactly what activity they would like to do, how, when and where they will do it and most importantly what they want to get out of it.
Shorter follow-up appointments are also available if and when required. Consultations will take place on Wednesday afternoons between 12-4pm. Appointments can be made via referrals from health care professionals, community workers or by the individual themselves by contacting Pilton Community Health Project on 0131 551 1671 or e-mail liannepipskyj@pchp.org.uk
