Pilton Counselling Service
Pilton Counselling Service is a free, accessible service for local people over the age of 16 who want help with emotional, personal or relationship difficulties. A free crèche is available.
What is counselling?
Counselling is where
you can talk to a trained counsellor about things that matter most to you.
There is no right or wrong way of doing this. For example, some people
start by telling their life story, while others start with how they are
feeling right now. Counsellors are trained to listen carefully and help
you talk.
Counselling sessions last for an hour and are usually once a week. Counselling
can last as long as the counsellor and the client feel it is useful. The
sessions are confidential.
Why come to counselling?
People come for counselling for lots of different reasons, for example,
Feeling lonely, frightened or fed up about relationships, work or just life in general.
Feeling worried, angry, anxious, confused or depressed without knowing why.
Upset about things from the past.
Dealing with a loss or some other kind of crisis in your life.
Dealing with difficult situations in your family.
Feeling worthless, a nobody.
How does counselling work?
Counselling is not a magic wand, but sometimes being listened to can help you to feel better about yourself and your situation. It can also help you to understand yourself and life better and maybe make changes in your life.
How do I get counselling?
If you would like more information, or think counselling could help you, please phone us on 0131 551 1671. There may be a waiting list, but we will keep in touch with you and offer you an appointment as soon as we can.
We can offer daytime sessions at the Health Project or evening sessions at Craigroyston Community Centre.
Counselling in schools
We also offer counselling to students at Craigroyston Community High and Broughton High Schools. These free sessions take place during school hours either in or close to the school.
Students can talk to the counsellor about their feelings or things they are worried about. Counselling can help students make sense of their feelings and sort out things they are unsure or confused about. Counselling can also help students learn more about themselves and make choices about their lives.
Counsellors are trained to listen carefully and help you say how things are for you. Sometimes drawing, painting, using music or other things can help with this.
Students usually come to counselling once a week for the length of a subject period. This arrangement is regularly reviewed and can last for as long as the counsellor and student feel it is helpful.
Guidance staff will arrange for the students to get a note to let them out of class for their counselling appointment. The notes will not say why the student is leaving class, only that they have permission to leave.
Counselling is confidential. This means that the counsellor will not talk to anyone else about what has happened in the counselling session, without talking to the student about it first.
If you are a student at one of these schools and think you might be interested in having counselling, speak to any of the guidance staff in your school or leave a message in the counsellor’s school post box.
